Oakland based research and advocacy organization PolicyLink has just released a new report showing the tremendous steps that California's community colleges have taken in training tomorrow's much needed workforce. The report was released on the same day the White House announced a significant national investment in community college training programs.

New, innovative programs at state community colleges are doing the most in building and maintaining the state's vital infrastructure systems that will create more than 350,000 jobs in the next decade. "Pathways out of Poverty for Vulnerable Californians: Policies that Prepare the Workforce for Middle Skill Infrastructure Jobs" highlights the proven programs in place now that are helping to expand job opportunities for low-income, undereducated young Californians, while providing new skills for workers displaced by the recession.

The report, authored by a team headed by Victor Rubin and Rubén Lizardo of PolicyLink, examines a crucial issue for the future: the growing demand for "middle-skill" jobs, the ones requiring education beyond a high school diploma but less a bachelor's degree. These are the future jobs within the state's infrastructure sector that lay the groundwork for the state's growth; infrastructure is the spine that will hold the state's economy.

California's community college job-training programs are critical for preparing young people in poor communities to compete in the future workforce. The "Pathways out of Poverty for Vulnerable Californians" report examines the challenges that low-income people face when access to jobs, quality education, and job-training programs are out of reach. The report directly illustrates the importance of the California Community College system and other schools across the country to the nation's recovery and its healthy future.
