Welcome to First Set, a rundown of the best jazz to be heard this weekend across the region.
THURSDAY
Stanley Clarke: This bassist extraordinaire requires no introduction here, as Clarke has been among jazz’s most adept and pioneering players for something approaching five decades. With Ruslan Sirota (piano, keyboards), Zach Brock (violin) and Ronald Bruner (drums). Lloyd Gregory opens. 8 and 10 p.m.; also 8 and 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Yoshi’s, 1330 Fillmore, San Francisco. $20-$35.
FRIDAY
Chuck Peterson Quintet with Dorothy Lefkovits: Put happy hour Jazz in the Bookshop on your weekend schedule. With Peterson (reeds), Howie Dudune (reeds), Glen Deardorff (guitar), Dean Reilly (bass), Tony Johnson (drums) and Lefkovits (vocals). Bird and Beckett, 653 Chenery St., San Francisco.
Steve Erquiaga/Frank Martin Group: Guitarist Erquiaga and keyboardist Martin will spotlight their own compositions and arrangements. With Dan Feiszli (bass) and Curt Moore (drums). 8 p.m. Armando’s, 707 Marina Vista, Martinez. $10.
SATURDAY
Chattermill Jazz Unit: Here’s a new (to me, anyway) ensemble featuring Narciso Jaramillo (piano), Bishu Chatterjee (bass) and Jeff Weinmann (drums). For this gig, they’ll be joined by Anton Schwartz (saxophone). 2 p.m. Avonova Studios, 417 Avon St., Oakland.
SUNDAY
Kenny Washington and Michael O'Neill: This vocal-sax duo has developed a particularly intuitive musical relationship. The Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society wants you to see/hear them in action. 4:30 p.m. Douglas Beach House, Half Moon Bay. $35.
Daria: No relation, let’s assume, to the snide animated character of the ‘90s, this vocalist will focus on standards and originals infused with touches of Latin and Brazilian rhythms. With Jonathan Alford (piano), Jean Michel Huré (guitar), Sam Bevan (bass) and Michaelle Goerlitz (percussion). 4:30 p.m. Jazzschool, 2087 Addison St., Berkeley. $12-$15.
And pencil these in…
Peter Erskine New Trio: Wed., Yoshi’s, San Francisco
Preservation Hall Jazz Band: Wed., Sunset Center, Carmel
