Bay Area Jazz: Feb. 9-12

Welcome to First Set, a rundown of the best jazz to be heard this weekend across the region.

THURSDAY
Larry De La Cruz: SFJAZZ’s Hotplate series continues with Bay Area saxman De La Cruz celebrating the music of Cannonball Adderley. The evening includes the Front Burner session on Cannonball led by Education Director Rebeca Mauleón and a stellar band comprised of  John Worley (trumpet), Mike Zilber (tenor saxophone), Adam Shulman (piano), Dan Feiszli (bass) and Jon Arkin (drums). 8 p.m. Amnesia, 853 Valencia St., San Francisco. $5.
Ravi Coltrane:
The son of legendary jazz parents has emerged over the past two decades to be among the music’s brightest and most original talents. With David Virelles (piano), Joe Sanders (bass) and Kendrick Scott (drums). 7 and 8:30 p.m. Kuumbwa Jazz Center, 320 Cedar St., Santa Cruz. $25-$28; also 8 p.m. Friday, Firehouse Arts Center, 4444 Railroad Ave., Pleasanton. $12-$30.

FRIDAY
Manhattan Transfer: This veteran ensemble needs no introduction here, having won 10 Grammy awards over a career reaching back 40 years. Not a bad way to accentuate your Valentine Day’s weekend. 8 and 10 p.m.; also 8 and 10 p.m. Saturday, 6 and 8 p.m. Sunday. Yoshi’s, Jack London Square, Oakland. $45-$45.
Pete Escovedo and Sons:
The veteran Latin jazz percussionist makes it a family affair this weekend with an assist from Juan and Peter Michael Escovedo. 8 and 10 p.m.; also 8 and 10 p.m. Saturday, 6 and 8 p.m. Sunday. Yoshi’s, 1330 Fillmore, San Francisco. $18-$28.
Brubeck Institute
Jazz Quintet:
The Institute in question is part of the Conservatory of Music at University of the Pacific in Stockton, Brubeck’s alma mater. The quintet is simply five of the best young players in jazz today: Tree Palmedo (trumpet), Rane Roatta (tenor saxophone), Alec Watson (piano), Bill Vonderhaar (bass) and Malachi Whitson (drums). 8 p.m. Jazzschool, 2087 Addison St., Berkeley. $12-$15.

SATURDAY
Tuck and Patti: This guitar-and-voice duo are a virtual walking valentine, as they have been spinning jazzy tales of love on stage even longer (29 years) than they’ve been married couple (26 years). 8 p.m. Napa Valley Opera House, 1030 Main St., Napa. $25-$30.

SUNDAY
Hugh Masekela: The South African trumpeter has stood for nearly half a century at the crossroads of jazz and world music. In other words, expect to hear a lot more than just “Grazing in the Grass.” 7 p.m. Napa Valley Opera House, 1030 Main St., Napa. $30-$35.
Freddy Cole:
Nat’s brother is a musical force in his own right, a Grammy-nominated veteran pianist-vocalist with a distinctive style and touch. With Randy Napoleon (guitar), Elias Bailey (bass) and Curtis Boyd (drums). 7 p.m.; also 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, the Rrazz Room, Hotel Nikko, 222 Mason St., San Francisco. $30-$45.
Eddie Palmieri and the Brian Lynch Jazz Quartet:
Montalvo Arts is presenting this evening of fine jazz in the South Bay. 7:30 p.m. Carriage House Theatre, Saratoga. $40-$50.
