Every year, almost 6 million people flock to the Bavarian city of Munich for the world's largest fair, Oktoberfest. For many a beer drinker, a trek to this Shangri-La of brews might prove too expensive, too far away, or just not feasible. But have no fear, my thirsty friends, for Oktoberfest is coming to Houston October 19th!
Originally a wedding celebration for King Ludwig I in 1810, the festival has continued (aside from the World Wars) for the past 200 years in the same location as the original. Numerous other Oktoberfests have sprang up across the world, and Houston is one of them. Located just southwest of 290 and 610 near the trendy Heights neighborhood, Oktoberfest features a diverse range of activities for the whole family, such as barrel races, a bratwurst toss, and traditional dances. There remains the ubiquitous draw for the masses as well: copious amounts of delicious beer.
With a tentative beer list not to scoff at, a few of the local favorites (Karbach, St. Arnolds) will be on offer with a several traditional Bavarian beers meeting the lofty sud standards of the original festival (Hofbrau, Spaten). Lederhosen, bratwurst, traditional dances, enough beers to appease any connoisseur, and so much more, make sure to mark your calendars!
