Battling holiday weight gain: Focus on can do's vs can't do's

See also

How many times do you hear all the things you can't do when it comes to weight loss? But do you ever really focus on the things you can do instead? Its sort of like changing focus from negative to positive. Right?

We're hard on ourselves. Am I right, ladies? We forget about the good things we do for ourselves like choosing that grilled chicken at lunch when we really wanted the breaded chicken. Instead we focus on that one choice that wasn't so good... like the extra couple of French fries we snuck in when no one was looking.

We think about all the things people say we shouldn't do, like eating carbs, eating out, going to the gym at the wrong time of day. In turn we feel guilty, can't let the bad choice go, and end up throwing our hands up in the air before 2 p.m. every Monday.

So here's my advice for this holiday season. Actually, lets just make that the next three days: Focus on what you can do.

1. You can drink more water.

Water helps keep you hydrated, helping you stay energized. So just drink more. Don't worry about how much. Maybe you should have at least 64 ounces. But is it a failure if you don't get that much? No. Even one more cup than you usually have is a success. So celebrate it.

2. You can schedule some time in your day to move more.

Did I say exercise? No, I didn't. Exercise is great. But what if you just move more than you did yesterday? What if you took the stairs? What if you got really crazy and popped those dusty P90X DVDs off the shelf and took one for a spin?

So what if you don't get through the whole thing! Its more than you did yesterday, right? Celebrate that success! Tomorrow you can make it a goal to get through 5 extra minutes of that DVD than you did today.

3. You can cut back on calories.

Its up to you where you wanna make the cut. Maybe its the Soda. Maybe you can cut the piece of chocolate you have after every meal. Cut it back to once a day or cut something out all together .

If you could cut back just 500 calories a day, you'd lose one pound this week. Crazy, right? Think about how adding in some exercise would impact that total.

So lets start small. Do you think you could focus on those three things? Every three days, lets meet back here and put together a new set of goals. Lets take it three days at time, focus on what we can do for a few days, regroup, celebrate the success, forget the stuff we didn't succeed at, and move in the right direction together.

I'd love to hear what your goal is for the next three days and your success along the way! So please comment and lets walk this road together!

Hey... If I lost 115 pounds... so can you.
