The “Battlestar Galactica” universe continues to grow with the announcement of another new spinoff series. While we wait to see if a second season of “Caprica” is go, Syfy has given the green light for a two-hour movie/pilot for “Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome.” The potential series will follow a young William Adama(played by Edward James Olmos on “Battlestar Galactica”) during the Cylon war.
Things to look forward to in this prequel series is meeting ancestors of the characters we’ve grown to love, the introduction of Beka Kelly (the strong and remarkable woman Adama connects with in the pilot), and, of course, the original conflict with the Cylons – 1978 spaceships and centurions and all.
Here’s the press release from SyFy with all the details:
Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome takes place in the 10th year of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, a sentient robotic race, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a brash rookie viper pilot enters the fray. Ensign William Adama, barely in his 20’s and a recent Academy graduate, finds himself assigned to the newest battlestar in the Colonial fleet… the Galactica. The talented but hot-headed risk-taker soon finds himself leading a dangerous top secret mission that, if successful, will turn the tide of the decade long war in favor of the desperate fleet. “The ‘Galactica’ universe as re-imagined by Ron Mooreand David Eickis rich with possibilities and backstory,” said SyFy’s Mark Stern. “We jumped at the chance to revisit the William Adama character and explore this exciting chapter in the BSG narrative which falls between the events of the original seriesand the prequel, ‘Caprica,’ currently airing on Syfy.”
“While maintaining the themes of politics, social propaganda, and the timeless question: what does it mean to be human? – ‘Blood & Chrome’ will also return us to the authentic, relentless depiction of combat and the agony and ecstasy of human-Cylon war, which was the hallmark of ‘Battlestar Galactica’s’ early seasons,” said Eick. Michael Taylorwrote the teleplay from a story by Eick, Taylor and Bradley Thompson& David Weddle.

Would this be a good jump-in for someone who has never watched the previous series?
Yes, it's going to be Adama in his 20s during the first Cylon war. It will be more about the conflict between the cylons and humans with lots of cool stuff thrown in. If you missed 'Battlestar Galactica' it really rocked. I highly recommend watching full episodes at http://www.syfy.com/battlestar/episodes/episodes.php but it won't be necessary to know what happens in BSG since the new series is a prequel about what happened leading up to BSG. It should be great.
Loved BSG. This is great news!
