Pennsylvania's unions can be pleased with several victories in 2012. The State remained in Obama's column, Union-backed candidates won election to Auditor General and Attorney General, and a controversial voter ID law was put on hold. Efforts to privatize the state's liquor stores and set up a school voucher system were blocked.
But 2013 will bring battles, one major one may be an effort to have Pennsylvania pass ALEC-inspired 'Right to work' legislation.
A second battle is what seems like a sweetheart deal with a British company to take over managment of the State's Lottery system. Governor Corbett did extend a deadline by AFSCME Council 13 to come up with an alternative plan.
The registration deadline for the 2013 Legislative Conference, is getting closer. The deadline to reserve room blocks for the February 11 and 12 conference at the Harrisburg Hilton is January 11. Forms may be accessed here.
I wish all of you a happy, prosperous and just 2013.
