As of December 30, 2012, Battleground Games & Hobbies in Abington, MA will be closing its doors. Don't worry, though. The closing is only temporary. The local gaming store has finally grown too big for their home of ten years. Owner, Derek Lloyd, and many employees and friends spent this past Sunday and Monday moving to the new 2,200 square foot location located less than half a mile down the road at 1423 Bedford Street. The new location contains 25 foot warehouse-style ceilings and a new glass storefront, thus, giving customers more breathing room during their gaming experience.
Battlegrounds has been the home to local gamers since they first opened in 2002. Marshfield resident Joshua Warren has been going to the store since 2005. He attributes his loyalty to the friendships and comradery of the other patrons. "I go there to hang out with friends. Instead of going to the bar, or whatever, I go to the store to play games with them."
The store plays host to many weekly gaming events. One of them is Friday Night Magic, a Wizards of the Coast, Inc. sponsored outing for people who play Magic: The Gathering. Over the years, the number of participants has doubled, now averaging 40 or more players a week. The store also has numerous over-sized tables that are for, but not limited to, Warhammer 40K and Warmachine. Customers can also come in to play board games, card games, and many groups gather for their weekly role playing game campaigns.
Battleground Games & Hobbies will be holding its grand opening at the new store on January 12, 2013.
