Details for the next “Battlefield” game leaked Monday, ironically enough, via an update to the Battlelog service that revealed the game’s name, some of the first images, the multiplayer game modes and the platforms it will be released on. As the rumors suggest, “Battlefield Hardline” is a police-themed edition and is due out this fall.
“Battlefield Hardline” will be a cross-generation title for the PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC according to code on the Battlelog site found by getbblog and koenv.com with additional assets discovered on Reddit. Recent financial statements from the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014 indicated that a new “Battlefield” game would be released this year as part of EA’s new strategy of yearly “Battlefield” releases every year from different developers. Visceral Games, the studio behind “Dead Space 3,” is the lead developer for this one according to Polygon and not DICE.
The leak is amazingly extensive as it includes the names of the four soldier classes – Enforcer, Mechanic, Operator, Professional – plus references to maps (MP_Downtown) and new multiplayer modes (Blood Money, Bomb Squad, and Carrier Assault). The game will features one side playing S.W.A.T. officers while the other side will be Thieves.
Meanwhile, Twitter account Battlefield Daily spotted a number of awards from the game. Icons for “BFH” and “BFH+” were also spotted which indicate that the Premium subscription option will return for “Battlefield Hardline.”
Electronic Arts was undoubtedly planning a big revealed for the game during its E3 2014 press conference scheduled for June 9. Whether today’s leak will force the publisher to begin revealing the game earlier than planned remains to be seen.
Other games expected to make an appearance during the conference include “Star Wars Battlefront,” which is also being developed by DICE but probably won’t be released until 2015 or 2016, along with “Dragon Age: Inquisition” and more. The 2014 line-up for Electronic Arts is relatively light outside of the annual sports titles so it will need a big name franchise like “Battlefield” to help with sales during the holiday season. The question is how much the brand has been damaged by the bug-plagued release of “Battlefield 4.”
