The Battle of Wilson's Creek, also known as the Battle of Oak Hills, was one of the bloodiest early Civil War battles west of the Mississippi. The battle began early on August 10, 1861, as the Union forces were led by Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyon led the charge against the confederate's Missouri Union State Guard. By dividing the troops and flanking around, the confederates won the battle after shooting General Lyon in the heart on Bloody Hill. Low on supplies and ammunition, the union troops retreated toward Springfield. As a result of Wilson's Creek, the confederates gained control of the southwestern part of Missouri.
The photos in this article capture the battlefields where this historic day took place. They were captured via the driving tour and trails along part of the Wilson's Creek National Battlefield.
