Championships are just around the corner.
The derby world is in frenzy over the recent seeding announcement by the WFTDA for the Milwaukee Championships which also includes four Division 2 teams playing for their own trophy. There is another Championship that will take place a few weeks before WFTDA; though there may be less people anxiously awaiting this tournament, their fandom is just as strong.
The Men’s Roller Derby Association will hold its eight-team end of the year tournament on October 19 and 20 at the Long Line Family Rec Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
This year has seen an explosion of interest in the MRDA. The association now boasts 34 member leagues, including the first international teams: Mont Royals, Southern Discomfort, and New Wheeled Order. This year was the first time that East Coast Extravaganza hosted a sanctioned men’s bout, and the bout between New York Shock Exchanged and Mass Maelstrom was considered one of the best of the weekend (if not of the year). Your Mom Men’s Roller Derby shocked the derby community a few weeks later when, in a closed scrimmage highly tweeted about, they defeated Gotham Girls Roller Derby by a considerable margin.
Men’s derby is not only here to stay, but it is quickly gaining the support of the women of WFTDA. So much that this year’s Championships in Iowa will be streamed live over WFTDA.tv for the first time.
In preparation for the event, I am going to be doing a series of articles previewing the teams that will be duking it out to be MRDA Champions.
The MRDA releases rankings a year. The most recently rankings were released , which took into consideration summer bouts, ECDX and the Mohawk Valley Cup (where there were quite a few upsets). Rankings are compiled by the votes of member leagues, similar to how WFTDA composed rankings before 2013. The final top eight teams that will be heading to Championships are:
Deep Valley Belligerents (Ukiah, California)
Bridgetown Menace (Portland, Oregon)
Puget Sound Outcast Derby (Seattle, Washington)
Mass Maelstrom (Massachusetts)
Magic City Misfits (Jacksonville, Florida)
New York Shock Exchange (New York, New York)
The Gatekeepers (St. Loius, Missouri)
Your Mom Men’s Roller Derby (Des Moines, Iowa)
The first whistle of the tournament will be at 8:30a Central (so, 9:30a for us East Coast folks). Though streaming the tournament is fun, being there is better. There will be plenty of vendors to satisfy your needs for all things derby (including Sk8 Ratz, Atom Wheels, Riddell, Bont, Roll Out Magazine and Roller Derby Elite. A pair of Luigino Skates, provided by Sk8 Ratz, will be given away to one lucky attendee (to enter, buy a program at the event). Several other raffles will be taking place over the weekend as well.
Book your hotel. Book your flight. Or ready your stream. Some of the best derby you will see all year is on the horizon. If you have never watched a men’s derby bout, prepare to get a new perspective. Get all the information at the MRDA Champs page. Learn more about the host league, the Sioux City Kornstalkers on their Facebook.
