The upcoming Batman TV show, "Gotham," will tell the story of Gotham City before Bruce Wayne took on the role of Batman and became the city's protector. According to The Hollywood Reporter on Feb. 8, the show has tapped "Southland" star Ben McKenzie to play the lead character in the show, James Gordon.

Of course, James Gordon becomes the iconic Commissioner Gordon in the comics, a character portrayed by Gary Oldman in the Christopher Nolan movies. At the time frame of this Batman TV show, he will simply be a police detective on the Gotham police force, one of the good cops in a unit full of corrupt cops.

The Batman TV show will also feature a young Bruce Wayne, 11-years-old at the time of the show. That will allow "Gotham" to serve as a true prequel to the Batman mythology, showing how the city became as corrupted as it did before Batman returned as the dark avenger.

Ben McKenzie was also one of the main leads in the popular Fox television show, "The O.C." He really helped re-define his acting skills in "Southland" and "Gotham" will give him a brand new showcase and a chance to gain even more fans.

Along with Detective James Gordon, the Batman TV show will also show how many of the villains in the Batman universe grew into power. The Penguin is expected to be the first major villain introduced on the show and will be followed by many others, including the origin of Catwoman.

The Batman TV show "Gotham" has been devised and will be ran by Bruno Heller ("The Mentalist").
