Batman: Arkham Asylum, Rocksteady Studio's multi-award winning game, is being re-released in a Game of the Year Edition. While the new edition is already out over in Europe, America shelves won't see the game till May 11, 2010.
The new edition will come complete with the six extra challenge maps previously released as downloadable content. The selling point however appears to be a new option to play the game in 3D on any standard and high def televisions. The game of the year edition uses TriOviz 3D ,"an innovative new technology which offers a play-in-3D option compatible with all standard and high definition TV sets," to add a new dimension to the gameplay experience.
"TriOviz 3D is a patented 3D process which adds depth to the game, visible to players wearing the included 3D glasses. By leveraging the depth-of-field while maintaining the original gameplay and colour integrity, TriOviz 3D creates a far more immersive gaming experience, allowing console players to dive deeper into the gothic world of Arkham Asylum."
Seeing as the original game never had any moments where anyone or thing reached out towards the player except maybe during encounters with a certain vilian, this most likely means that we won't see any cheap gimmicky 3D effects. Most likely the game world will simply pop out much like the world did in Avatar.
Batman: Arkham Asylum was a good game especially compared to the fate of most comic book based games, but this Game of the Year Edition doesn't have anything really special that would warrant going out and buying the game again. There has been no mention of any extra content not seen in the original game nor any new downloadable content. Not to mention, us 360 owners still don't get to play as the Joker. The only new feature is the 3D so if you already have this game then there is no reason to go out and buy the new edition. If you want the challenge maps, you can get them for a lot cheaper on their own
However, the upside is that the game will sell for only $49.99, the same price that the original is currently going for. So if you don't already have the game then this may be worth the wait so you can get the whole experience in one bundle. Otherwise, you might as well pass.
Either way, local Gamestops are already taking pre-orders for Batman: Arkham Asylum Game of the Year Edition. If you're interested, here are the address and contact information for a few of the local stores.
