Sorry parents of Coy Mathis, you are wrong. Very wrong. Dead wrong.
But first, thank you for being such understanding and supportive parents. People must provide unconditional love to their children. If such mercy was extended to everyone on the planet by all others especially politicians, that would be true happiness. But this column is a realist.
Socrates posited that if children were communal, then society would take total responsibility. Right now, it seems as if folks are only advocating for fetuses writ large.
Back to the topic at hand. If one is not willing to always support their progeny and guide them, then get a dog.
It is said that God doesn’t make mistakes. Therefore and ergo, if some children feel that they must be a different gender than the one of their birth, thus they have a unique mission and message. Transgenders truly believe that they were born in the wrong body.
To underscore that point, many, when they reach a certain age, surgically remove certain body parts that are quite important.
But the devil is in the details. Like restrooms.
The school district is right. They are not handing your child a pail and saying: good luck.
Coy is free to use the boys’ room, the bathroom in the nurse’s office or one that is gender neutral.
If this column had a daughter in elementary school, it would be unacceptable for her to use the same facilities as a child with male genitalia
One can only hope and pray that Coy grows up free of violence and hate.
She has different circumstances facing her because, frankly, she is different.
Coy has a lot of teach society. A few high profiles individuals brought this issue into the mainstream but have not mitigated most of the fear and prejudice.
If the worst obstacle that Coy faces is a gender-neutral bathroom, then she is very lucky.
