New laws in effect ban the use and purchase of bath salt in Ohio. Bath salt, also known as “K2” and “Spice” have been used by individuals as a stimulant that produces alarming effects similar to cocaine and marijuana.
There have been numerous local communities including the Akron/Cleveland areas that sold bath salts on a regular basis.
Law enforcement officials have reported more incidents in which people using the salts become delusional, hallucinate, become highly agitated, paranoia, experience high heart rates & chest pains along with loss of motor skills.
The material in the salt is considered a form of synthetic marijuana, making possession of the item illegal.
Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh shares details on why they are unsafe. She mentioned that bath salts are dangerous but because they have been legally sold in the community, they give an illusion that they are safe to use. The problem is, if they get into the wrong hands, they could be lethal.
Poison control centers across the county have reported cases including bath salt. Bath salts have been linked to several deaths.
Anyone possessing, selling, purchasing or giving them as a gift could result in criminal charges.
