Betting favourite Bated Breath will miss Saturday’s Group 1 flat horse race Darley July Cup because of the risky ground conditions at Newmarket. Early Saturday, trainer Roger Charlton posted a message on his Twitter account: “After 18mm of rain over night at Newmarket Bated Breath will not be running in the July Cup on ground that will be very testing.”

Punters may see the five-year-old Bated Breath next in the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York on August 24. Jockey James Doyle will instead mount Genki who is the 40-1 outsider, according to racing tipsters.

Krypton Factor and Libranno will also miss the race because of the wet weather. The Met Office is predicting rain throughout many areas in England for Saturday. “Heavy showers and rain in the south slowly clearing, although perhaps taking until late evening to clear from the far southeast. Elsewhere, sunny intervals and scattered, perhaps locally heavy showers.”

With Bated Breath out of contention, Strong Suit, and Sepoy will be two of the betting odds favourites among a field of a dozen sprinters. Strong Suit leads all runners at the Newmarket meeting with a Timeform weight-adjusted ratings of 140, followed by Sepoy (138), Ortensia (133), Society Rock (133), and Dandy Boy (130).
