Bastille’s North American Tour stops in Chicago at the Riviera Theatre

When London-based singer/songwriter Dan Smith called his band Bastille, he was merely thinking of his birthday, July 14, France’s Bastille Day. But for the biggest selling new British act of the last year, with hindsight Smith’s choice seems an ominously apt metaphor for their dramatic impact. Formed by Smith after recruiting keyboard player Kyle Simmons, bassist Will Farquarson and drummer Chris ‘Woody’ Wood, Bastille went on to spend four consecutive weeks atop Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart with the smash single “Pompeii”. They will follow its trio of January 2014 North American shows with a more extensive run, which will kick off on Monday, March 31st at the Riviera Theatre in Chicago, IL. Tickets are on sale now.

Virgin Records released ‘All This Bad Blood this past January, a multi-part deluxe album that includes Bastille’s 2013 debut album, ‘Bad Blood’, as well as additional content divided into two parts. The first part, “All This Bad Blood,” contains tracks old and new that the band recorded over the past few years. The second, “Other People’s Heartache,” presents choice selects from Bastille’s two mix tapes – Other People’s Heartache Parts 1 and 2 – plus two completely new tracks, which were recorded in the last few weeks. See below for track listing.

“All This Bad Blood feels like a complete representation of what we have done so far and what we’d like to do in the future,” says Dan Smith, Bastille’s lead singer.

“The first part allows us to properly release the tracks that we love and play live all the time but couldn’t fit on our proper debut. The second part is a mini version of one of our mix tapes which weaves in a couple of new songs that show the extremes of where we’re heading on our next album; one guitar-driven and the other way more electronic.”

Here in the States, Bad Blood is the top-selling debut British album of 2013, with more than 100,000 units sold. “Pompeii” continues to be one of the biggest singles of the year with worldwide sales of nearly two million. The “Pompeii” video, which has more than 47 million views, has just been added by MTV and VH1. More than 500,000 downloads of “Pompeii” have been sold in the U.S. The track is Platinum in the U.K. and New Zealand, double Platinum in Italy and triple Platinum in Australia.

BBC Music praised Bad Blood as a “really gratifying debut,” noting, “Bastille really deliver”. Given the indie music maelstrom, it’s a rarity to see a band achieve so much in such a short space of time but Bastille are paving their own way, creating great pop songs that are both absorbing and genre-defining.
