More than 200 pro and amateur anglers from all over the country will descend on Ridgeland, Mississippi this weekend beginning Oct. 17 for the Bassmaster Bass Pro Shops Central Open.
The tournament will take place on Ross Barnett Reservoir in Ridgeland. The weigh in on Saturday at the Bass Pro Shops in Pearl.
This is a much anticipated stop on the 2013 Bassmaster Bass Pro Shop series.
Ross Barnett Reservoir should prove to be a tough test for participants.
Ross Barnett hosted the 1978 Bassmaster Classic, and this 33,000-acre reservoir will offer participants with a variety of habitats and will require quick decisions to be in contention.
Experts say this should be one of the most interesting Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster events in a long time.
Ross Barnett, known to locals as "The Rez," has an average depth of 10 feet, so shallow water skills will be called on this weekend.
“We’ve had two big tournaments here) in the past two years, and from both of those, I know it’s going to be tougher during a tournament than it normally is to catch fish here,” Jason Christie, Bassmaster professional said. “This river does have a lot of fish in it, but because of the number of boats and the amount of fishable water, pressure is going to play a big part in this tournament.”
A win here in Ridgeland could make the year for one angler and carry them to an overall championship.
Competitors will take off daily at 7 a.m. from Madison Landing. The weigh-ins on Day 1 and Day 2 will be at 3 p.m.right at the harbor.
The City of Ridgeland has been preparing for this special event for months. Hotels, restaurants and retail shops should notice an uptick in business this weekend.
Spectators are welcome all weekend and special events and entertainment will be ongoing throughout the duration of the tournament.
