The qualities that an angler needs for fishing is speed if you are traveling distances out on the water for tournament fishing. You want to be able to handle your boat in rough water. And a livewell system that will keep the fish healthy all day long and under different weather conditions is a must.
A bass boat standard length is 18 feet, which can do horsepower of 150 up and over, which is all the speed anyone not fishing tournaments would need. A trolling motor, electric that will manuever the bass boat in tight spaces with thrust to get through grass and some wind. Trolling motors come in either foot or hand operated motors, that is all up to your preference.
If you are a weekender and fishing close to home or just to vacation, you do not run your boat flat out and 75-125 horsepower will do the trick and thrity pound thrust trolling motor will work
A fish finder is important, because it shows the graphic of the fish and the structure. Fish finding technology has come a long way in the past years and is a very helpful tool. "NASA on water" I call it, the GPS satellite navigation systems tell you where you are on the water, your favorite "hot" spot is and your mama, if you want it to.
For livewells if you fish with a partner dual livewells are the best. Otherwise a livewell with a terrific aeration system keeps the fish alive and healthy.
Built in storage, a lot of built in storage are important like closets are to your home, for rods and tackle, rain gear, life jackets, cooler and the other hundreds of items you need when you are fishing.
Safety, people take their fishing boats for granted and end up putting themselves and the people with them in trouble. Boating is a priviledge just like driving a car is, and the rules on the water should be the same as driving a car, or you can ruin a good fishing trip.
