An assistant girls’ basketball coach shot and killed a 16-year old during an attempted robbery. Another teen was injured during the incident. ABC News reports on Feb. 6, 2013 that the alleged robbery happened at Martin Luther King Junior High School in Detroit, Michigan. Police are looking into whether charges will be filed. The incident occurred at the school on the afternoon of February 6.
Ernest Robinson, the assistant girls’ basketball coach, was approached by two males while walking with a couple of team members. The men stated that this was a robbery.
Officer Cassandra Lewis, a spokeswoman for the Detroit Police Department, said there was a struggle followed by gun shots. When it was over, 16-year old Michael Scott, a ninth-grade student at the East Side School was dead and another teen, aged 15, was injured. The teen’s name has not been released due to his age.
Michael Scott’s mother told ABC News that her son was not armed and did not own a gun. The Detroit police department has not issued any statement about whether the robbery suspects were armed.
Ernest Robinson was carrying a concealed weapon legally. He is a reserve police officer and has a carry permit. A warrant request was submitted to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. No charges have been filed against Robinson.
