For 56 years, green bean casseroles has been a Thanksgiving staple. It’s super easy to make (it is even mixed in the dish it is cooked in) and all ages seem to love it. Below is the classic recipe along with 10 easy variations that are sure to please even the pickiest green bean eater!
Easy Green Bean Casserole
Ingredients:
1 can (10 3/4 ounces) Campbell's® Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup
½ cup milk
1 teaspoon soy sauce
Dash ground black pepper
Green beans ~
1 ½ pounds fresh green beans (cut tips off) or
Frozen beans thawed: either 2 boxes (9 oz. each) or bag (16 - 20 oz) or
2 16 oz. cans green beans, drained
1 1/3 cups French's® French Fried Onions ~ separated into two 2/3 cup quantities
Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
Stir the soup, milk, soy sauce, black pepper, beans and one of the 2/3 cups of the French fried onions directly into a 1 ½ -quart casserole.
Bake until the bean mixture is hot and bubbling, around 25 minutes. Remove from oven and stir the green bean mixture. Top with the remaining 2/3 cup of French fried onions and put back into the oven until the onions are golden brown, around five minutes.
Variations ~
Adding and/or substituting other items to the green bean casserole can make the recipe more appealing to your families (or guests) taste. Try any one of the options below or try adding a couple of them for new and exciting twist.
Substitute French style green beans or 4 cups broccoli florets for the regular green beans
Add ½ cup of fresh mushrooms to mixture before cooking
Sauté ¼ cup diced onions and ½ clove garlic (adjust to personal taste) and add to green bean mixture before cooking.
Add ½ cup of shredded cheese (cheddar, co-jack or favorite cheese) to the mixture before cooking. Sprinkle another ½ of cheese over the top along with the French fried onions step at the end of the basic recipe.
Substitute ¼ cup of sour cream for half of the milk used ~ ¼ of each as opposed to ½ cup of just milk
Add ½ cup coarsely chopped walnuts or almond slices to the green bean mixture before cooking
Many families prefer to either skip the soy sauce or use Worcestershire instead.
Add a splash (or more) or wine or cooking sherry before cooking
A small amount of red pepper flakes (or chopped red peppers) adds a bit of kick
Add 4 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled, before cooking
