Bob Bashara’s former mistress and another woman they were attempting to bring into their sexual relationship, both testified Thursday in Bashara’s preliminary examination in 36th District Court in Detroit. Bashara is facing first degree murder charges.
Bashara’s wife, Jane Bashara, went missing on Jan. 24, 2012 from her Grosse Pointe Park home. The mother of two was found the next day in her SUV in an east side Detroit alley. She had been beaten and strangled. Medical Examiner testimony earlier this week showed she suffered blunt force trauma and her trachea was crushed.
Janet Leehmann, from Oregon, testified she met Bashara on an alternative lifestyle website. He told her he was divorced and sent her presents.
Bashara’s former mistress, Rachel Gillett, said Bashara repeatedly lied to her, first about being a widower, then about being divorced, but every time she tried to break off the relationship he lured her back in. Bashara and Gillett were planning to buy a house together and began talking about bringing another woman into their relationship.
Gillett described the couple’s relationship, saying she was the “slave” and Bashara was the “master.”
She testified that in August 2009 she moved into an apartment that Bashara owned. In the basement was a sex dungeon, were Gillett met him about twice a week, she said.
Leehmann testified that Bashara came to see her in January 2012. She said that during the visit Bashara spent a lot of time on the phone. On one occasion she overheard him say “I want this done, I want this done this weekend.” When she asked him whom he was talking to Bashara replied, “a handyman.”
In June 2011 Bashara told her he was now divorced, they began planning a house purchase and started talking to Leehmann in Oregon about moving in with them.
Joseph Getz, a handyman who had done work for Bashara, pled guilty to second-degree-murder in Jane Bashara’s death. He said Bashara offered him money and a vehicle to kill his wife and threatened him if he did not go through with it.
Bashara, who denies he had anything to do with his wife’s death, is currently in prison after pleading guilty to solicitation of murder for trying to hire someone to have Gentz killed.
