Basalt Monolith, a vintage "Magic: The Gathering" card which hasn't seen print since "Revised," has been reprinted in the "Evasive Maneuvers" deck from "Commander (2013 Edition)" with new art and for the first time in the modern card frame. This obscure uncommon artifact will accelerate your mana production for a price: It'll slow you down afterwards.
Basalt Monolith - 3
Basalt Monolith doesn't untap during your untap step.
Tap: Add 3 to your mana pool.
3: Untap Basalt Monolith.
You'll need to either pay three mana or use an ability such as Votltaic Key in order to untap Basalt Monolith. Compare that with Thran Dynamo (recently reprinted in "From The Vault: Twenty"), which just costs one more mana to cast and doesn't have a drawback. Still, the ability to cast a card that costs seven on turn four makes Basalt Monolith a powerful option to play with.
One neat trick is to combine Basalt Monolith with Power Artifact in order to generate infinite mana.
Basalt Monolith would later get an upgrade in the form of Grim Monolith in "Urza's Legacy" which only costs two to cast however requires four mana to untap.
How will you use Basalt Monolith?
