Is there a roofie in your drink? Did someone spike your cocktail with a date rape drug? Imagine if there was a way to tell! A new line of cups, glassware, stirrers and straws designed to change in appearance if someone spikes your drink are on the horizon.
The barware is the brainchild of Boston area patent attorney Mike Abramson
who launched "Drink Savvy" after he and three of his close friends were drugged. He says, "With over a million estimated victims every year, chances are that someone close to your readers has had a similar experience, but together, we can prevent it from happening to anyone else."
Abramson is currently in the design and fundraising phase and hopes to launch the products to the public (and free to select rape crisis centers) by December 2013. DrinkSavvy’s ultimate goal is to use the success of the campaign to convince bars, clubs, and colleges to carry its barware and eventually make drug-facilitated sexual assault a crime of the past.
Common date rape drugs like: GHB, Ketamine and Rohypnol, are all odorless, colorless and tasteless, so right now it's nearly impossible to tell if your drink was tainted. Abramson says he's making the barware pretty full proof. "They're effortless and provide continuous drink monitoring throughout the night, because the same drink ware that you are drinking with is also the color changing material that makes invisible drugs visible. No need for the user to test or retest! All one has to do for protection is drink from a DrinkSavvy product."
