The Barry Gurney Memorial Laughlin Cup bowling tournament will be delayed from its originally scheduled late-June date, said Dustin Markowitz, whose Bowling Evolved website served as the sponsor for the first annual event in February 2013.

“We’re looking at a January date,” Markowitz said.

Markowitz said the tournament would still be held as planned at Riverside Lanes in Laughlin, Nev.

Bowling company Storm Products, Inc., and the Professional Bowlers Assn. will be handling the arrangements for the second annual event, Markowitz said.

The tournament was known as the Laughlin Cup in 2013. Its name has been changed to honor Gurney, who died in July at age 71 after a battle with cancer.

Gurney, who lived in West Hills, was one of the preeminent bowlers to come out of the San Fernando Valley. Gurney was a four-time PBA50 Tour champion who joined the PBA Senior Tour in 1991.

“Barry Gurney was the first to use a Storm bowling ball on television,” added Markowitz, a co-host on Bowling Evolved’s podcasts with pro bowler Eric Forkel.

Forty-three bowlers participated in the Laughlin Cup’s debut in 2013. Amateur Jonathan Ferrell of Scottsdale, Ariz., won the tournament title with a 217-179 victory over favored David Haynes of Las Vegas in the championship match.

Gurney advanced past the qualifying round and won two matches en route to placing third in the event.
