Yet another Barrington Stage Company production is moving to New York City.
Coming closely on the heels of the successful two year run of playwright Mark St. Germain's "Freud's Last Session" off-Broadway, another Barrington premiere will begin previews at the Westside Theatre in New York on October 11, with an official opening on October 29. And it's also by St. Germain and equally inspired by a real life character.
This time, it's "Becoming Dr. Ruth" (originally titled "Dr. Ruth--All the Way" in its Pittsfield engagement), a biographical play about the pioneering radio and television sex therapist, Dr. Ruth Westheimer. The play focuses not only on Dr. Ruth's fame, but also on her remarkable early years which saw her escaping from the Nazis on the Kindertransport and eventually becoming a sniper with the Haganah in Jerusalem just after the second world war. The work also focuses on her struggles as a single mother in New York while pursuing an education and trying to determine a career.
As at the Barrington Stage, the one-person play will once again star Debra Jo Rupp of television's "That 70's Show" as the title character and be directed by Julianne Boyd, the founder and artistic director of the Barrington Stage Company and the conceiver and director of the Broadway hit "Eubie." The off-Broadway production is being produced by Michael Alden, Stefany Bergson and Rodger Hess.
The BSC has initiated a number of other shows that have enjoyed successful lives beyond the Berkshires, most notably the William Finn-Rachel Sheinkin musical, "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee," which transferred to Broadway in 2005 where it won two Tony Awards, three Drama Desk Awards and numerous other honors. St. Germain's "Freud's Last Session" received the 2011 Best Play Award from the Off-Broadway Alliance. St. Germain is also the author of "Camping with Henry and Tom" and "Ears on a Beatle," as well as a new play "Scott and Hem in the Garden of Allah," which recently completed a world premiere run on the St. Germain Stage at BSC.
"Becoming Dr. Ruth" is scheduled for a limited run through January 12, 2014. Tickets are now on sale by calling Telecharge at 212.239.6200, through the Telecharge website at www.telecharge.com or by visiting the Westside Theatre Box Office at 407 West 43rd Street in New York.
