In Dry Creek Valley, Mauritson Family Winery was offering barrel tasting for a 2013 Cemetery Vineyard Zinfandel and a 2012 Rockpile Ridge Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon—both from the Rockpile AVA. The potential is already prominent in the 2013 Zinfandel which showcases subtle granite and mineral flavors, raspberry and cherry fruit, balanced tannins, and slight hints of bell pepper in the background. This wine is truly complex and judging by such complexity this early in the barreling process, this wine will become even more intricate and complex as the vintage continues to age in the barrel and bottle.
The same can be said for Mauritson's 2012 Rockpile Cabernet Sauvignon, which is very close to bottling, as it has been in the barrel 18 months already. With that being said, this wine prominently showcases a nice complexity of flavor and texture—proving that this wine has begun to age very well. The 2012 Rockpile Cabernet Sauvignon boasts strong grilled pepper and dark fruit flavors, balanced tannins, and very smooth body. With time in the bottle, this 2012 vintage is only going to become more impressive as time passes.
