Barnes & Noble to sell off Nook and get out of the publishing business?

Barnes & Noble announced today that they are looking to sell off their Nook division.

After announcing that their year end numbers are much lower than expected, Barnes & Noble is looking at ways to adjust and make their investors happy.

According to The Wall Street Journal Online, "The company reported that Nook sales surged 70% during the holiday season amid better than expected sales of its Nook Tablet, though sales of its $99 Nook Simple Touch e-reader product missed expectations. Sales of digital content, which includes digital books, also surged."

Barnes & Noble considered selling off the line at about the time that Borders filed for bankruptcy. Instead, they took more money in investments from John Malone and Liberty Media to try to make the line successful. Sales of the new $99 Nook e-reader fell far short from preditions and the investors are not happy. Barnes & Noble claims they underestimated the sales of all of the other black and white e-readers on the market.

The Wall Street Journal also reported on Wednesday that Barnes & Noble put its Sterling Publishing business up for sale. Is it the end of their ability to publish their own books as well as the end of the Nook for them?
