There is plenty of speculation that the Barnes & Noble announcement scheduled for Monday will be a new e-book that will compete with the Amazon Kindle Fire for your Christmas shopping dollars.
Amazon unveils Kindle Fire
The other major player in the e-book market, Amazon, unveiled the new and improved 7-inch Kindle Fire e-book reader in September,
Amazon's Kindle sales have done well over the years. First releasing the Kindle in 2007, the first generation of Kindle sold for around $400. The follow up versions of the Kindle family have drifted back in price with each new wave. The new Kindle Fire will cost $199.
Barnes & Noble strikes back
With last year's Nook Color selling at $249, there is a lot of speculation that Monday's Barnes & Noble announcement will offer the new and improved version of the Nook Color e-reader at the $199 or less price point, to compete directly with the Kindle Fire.
Barnes & Noble has relationships developed over the years with publishers, so they will more than likely look to leverage themselves as the choice of e-reader for serious readers, rather than just another small tablet device for reading books.
As the oldest and largest book retailer in the United States Barnes & Noble has a lot of loyal followers and over 700 stores nationwide where you can kick the tires and take a look at their product. Besides stores at many college campuses, Barnes & Noble has two retail stores in Delaware. You can find Barnes & Noble on the south side of Wilmington at the Christiana Mall, and heading north of the city at the Concord Mall.
It will be interesting to see what new product will hit the streets at Monday's press conference.
