Looking for ways to save money and help the environment? Here are some of the ways we do our part, and it saves us money too. We rarely ever “buy” anything for the barn, if we can find something else around the house to use instead. Here are some examples of the things we use around our place.
We use Sweet PDZ on the floor of our barn to soak up moisture, control odor and control flies. We use the bags the Sweet PDZ comes for trash bags. We had some friends give us their three or four gallon kitty litter buckets; two are used for the trash cans and the other two are used for our automatic water system.
When we send a bunny to a new home, we try to make the transition as smooth as possible. Everything that is sent home is sent in something re-purposed.
We feed old fashioned oatmeal to our rabbits as a treat. The container that the oatmeal comes in is saved to send hay home with a bunny.
Prescription pill bottles, vitamin bottles and other over the counter medicine bottles are saved to send oatmeal, cheerios, and conditioning mix home with bunny. Coffee creamer containers, peanut butter jars, jelly jars, and other condiment containers are also great for this.
Pringles cans, coffee cans, peanut containers, etc. are used to send home feed. They don't have to be filled but I try to send home enough for at least a couple of days.
The shampoo and lotion bottles we pick up at hotels are soaked and washed out; these are great for sending a little neomycin, a diarrhea medicine, home with bunny.
Juice bottles, milk jugs, Gatorade bottles etc are washed out good and saved to send water home and used to water our own rabbits.
The medicine cups that come with many of the liquid medicines are good to keep for various measuring cups. Kids usually don't understand a pinch of this or a pinch of that, so I use these as a measuring tool for them. If I have extra I can send one of these home with new bunny also.
Our feed sacks are made into tote sacks; the bags are cut in half, and sown to make a simple tote; then I use scrap fabric to make a strap to attach. We use these for sending home all the new bunny supplies, AND this shows them what feed we like and what the bag looks like.
