No disaster plan is ever 100% guaranteed, but the idea is to be as prepared as possible. When you have a plan in place, it is the best insurance you can have that you can safely rescue as many of your animals as possible, if the need was to come up. The calmer and more routine your plan becomes, the easier it will be if it ever has to be used.
Tip 2: Identification and record keeping could turn out to be very important in the event of a disaster. Rabbits are usually identified by a permanent tattoo in their left ear. Other farm animals are identified by tags placed in their ears. It is very important to keep on top of your identification routine, because this may be the only way you know who is who if disaster hits.
Another great system to use, for record keeping and identification, are Cage Tags, made and distributed by Cage Tags Inc. These come in a variety of colors and have many uses. There are id tags, breeding tags, for sale tags, etc. In the event of a disaster the use of these cages on individual stalls or cages could prove to be very helpful. We use many of these cage tags in our barn; below is a list of how we use these tags.
- Blue ID tags = bucks
- Greed ID tags = does
- Pink Nest box tags = breeding does
- Red blank tags = upcoming show information
- Orange black tags = temporary stays or illness that needs to be tended to
- Purple “For Sale” tags = rabbits we have for sale
- White blank tags = feeding instruction or temporary tags for babies before they are named
