We use an assortment of cage tags, in our rabbit barn, from Cage Tags Inc; and we have used some of the same ones for many years. The cage tags are re-usable but must be cared for properly; writing on them with permanent marker then leaving out in the sun can make them very hard to clean.
We have found an easy way to prepare them so you can use them over and over. When we buy new cage tags, before we ever use them, we put clear shipping tape to them, front and back. We apply one strip starting at front and continue around to the back of tag. Be very careful, because if you try to remove the shipping tape, too fast, some of the black lettering may come off; with a little practice it becomes very easy and allows years of continuous use. Though it is easier to do this before the first time you use the tags, you can still apply the tape to used ones, after you clean them.
To write information on our cage tags, we find the fine tip sharpie works the best. If the information needs to be changed or removed completely, most of the time, it is easily removed by a paper towel, or even an eraser; shirt sleeves work in a pinch too. Very seldom do we have to use any kind of marker spray, but occasionally we do if the information on the tag has been on there for an extended period of time.
