Barn tip: Apple cider vinegar for odors

Closing up your rabbit barn in the cold winter months can bring out the worst of the urine smell. Even with regular cleaning, the use of the Sweet PDZ on the floor and in the pans, the odor build-up is there because the ventilation is not the same as when your barn can stay open. Fans do help circulate the air but we have discovered that adding about 1 tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar (must have the “mother” in it) really helps control the ammonia build-up; apple cider vinegar is known to help neutralize the ammonia in urine. Having a closed, climate controlled barn or keeping rabbits in the house, can cause a little bit more work but with regular cleaning, using Sweet PDZ on floor and in pans, and adding the apple cider vinegar to their water, odors can be controlled.

You can find the organic apple cider vinegar, at your local Wal-Mart, and other grocery stores: located in same isle as the regular vinegar. You will notice that the organic apple cider vinegar is cloudier than your filtered apple cider vinegar.

Note: when adding apple cider vinegar to your rabbit's water, you may discover that water will need to changed at least once a week. Discard any leftover water and refill with new fresh water with the apple cider vinegar added.
