Summer is here and many will be closing up their barns, in hopes of keeping their rabbits as cool as possible. The spring and fall are a favorite time for rabbit owners because their barns can be left open, for the best ventilation. As the temperatures rise many will turn on their air conditioners and close up the barn.
With a closed barn, odors and ammonia can quickly become a problem. Now is the time to read through a previous article; Rabbits: Conquering the odor problem for some great tips for minimizing odors.
Several area breeders have discovered another trick to keeping odors to a minimum, for a longer period of time. After adding Sweet PDZ, that is talked about in the Rabbits: Conquering the odor problem article, simply add a thin layer of pine shavings. This helps to absorb even more of the dampness in the pan. Start with a thorough rinsing of the pan, add a thin layer of Sweet PDZ, sprinkle just a little Diatomaceous Earth, then top with a think layer of shavings for maximum odor control.
Trying to keep flies under control? Go a head and add a little fly bait in your pans or on the floor under your cages.
