Have you ever found yourself enthusiastically discussing the prospect of a weekend getaway, caught up in making plans when suddenly you sense a pair of brown eyes peering up at you?

So often those exciting plans turn into the annoyance of finding a place for our furry faithful friends to stay while we're out of town.

However, at Barkwells near Asheville four-legged family members are welcome to tag along. In fact, Barkwells isn't just dog friendly. Barkwells is dog-centric.

Located in the Western, North Carolina mountains between Asheville and Hendersonville, Barkwells offers luxury vacation cabin rentals for the entire family. The cabins feature all the amenities and comforts of home with special creature comforts.

Barkwells opened in 2004 when after years of traveling with their dogs, owners Ellen and Michael Winner turned their dream concept of a resort designed for dog-lovers into reality.

Today Barkwells features seven luxury cabins with identical amenities but slightly different configurations. Features include; fire place, wireless Internet, fully equipped kitchens, hot tub and of course dog beds, dog bowls and doggie doors.

The mountain property boasts ample open space for humans and pets to spread out, relax and enjoy nature. Supervised dogs are able to play and freely roam 7-acres of fenced in lawn or hang out on the deck with the rest of the family enjoying the vistas of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.

Not only does the pooch get to escape the daily grind, but the other family members can take advantage of the stocked fish pond, basketball hoop, picnic tables, hammocks, campfire ring and more.

There's also plenty to do and see nearby in Asheville and Hendersonville. Barkwells is away-from-it- all, but conveniently located near grocery stores and I-26.

January through March is normally the slow season at Barkwells, but vacationers can book on line for any time of year. The minimum stay is 2 nights but the average stay is longer. They also feature packages and gift certificates on their website.

The family dog is welcome, but for the first visit a $100 refundable pet deposit is required. After a first uneventful stay, no deposit is required for that dog.

If you love traveling with your dogs or if your puppy has never taken a vacation - Barkwells offers the opportunity to escape and spend time in the North Carolina mountains without leaving behind your beloved furry family member.

As Michael Winner puts it, “we've created a dog-centric aaahhhh experience.”
