In a much needed bit of good news, true freshman quarterback, Matt Barkley, was finally able to participate in a full practice. Barkley had been limited in workouts and missed this past Saturday's game against Washington due to a bruised shoulder suffered in the Trojans' victory against the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Getting Barkley back on the field is good news for the USC faithful as his replacement, redshirt sophomore Aaron Corp, was unable to get it done against the Huskies. While USC was able to run the ball reasonably well, Corp & Co. were unable to muster much else, going 0-for-10 on third down plays as well as stunting drives with costly penalties.
According to Scott M. Reid at OCRegister.com:
“Barkley took 18 snaps with the first team offense, completing five of 11 passes. Aaron Corp, the starter in Saturday’s upset loss at Washington, took nine snaps with the top offense, 18 snaps all together, completing six of 10 passes.”
While Corp could see time if Barkley is unable to go against the Cougars, Pete Carroll is obviously champing at the bit to get his “Golden Boy” back on the field. Said Carroll after Monday's practice, “It was really encouraging today that Matt’s going to be all right...I don’t have any problem playing him if he’s OK this week. The fact that he could practice today is a great sign.”
The fact that Coach Carroll is encouraged by Barkley's progress leads me to believe that Carroll will not be looking to Corp again anytime soon if Matt Barkley can play.
Stay tuned as the story develops.
