I had the opportunity to visit The Barking Crab in Boston, a place oftentimes driven by on my way to the Seaport area for a convention or dinner at one of many fine dining and casual stops just past the bridge. Finally, I was invited to a Boardwalk Bash fundraiser event for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester -- and I was ready to see what this venue under the yellow and red striped tent was really all about.
Because this night's theme was Boardwash Bash, the first thing that caught my eye was the tossing of bean bags through a board with holes, bringing me back to childhood memories of a similar game I used to play. Nostalgia set the tone for the remainder of the evening, with tables at the bar strewn with salt water taffy, Smarties candies (those teeny buttons of sugar stacked and wrapped in a roll of plastic) and more. I start the evening drinking a root beer float martini... just sayin' it's a blast from my past, taken up a notch.
As it was a fundraiser, there were lots of auction items on one of the long picnic tables under the tent, where I enjoyed the best crab cakes I could have imagined having under a tent, as well as shrimp cocktail, oysters on the half shell and more delectables. But it was the view that stole the show -- an early fall evening that was warm and offered a view of the sparkling city lights just past the water where a few schooners sailed by with a boatload of party-goers.
Truly a fun time, great for company events or large loud groups, in my opinion, I know I'll be back -- under the tent when the weather warms up again, but in the meantime, there is an adjoining rooftop restaurant to enjoy plates of fresh seafood in a casual setting with a wonderful view.
