In a workup towards the next America’s Cup, Emirates Team New Zealand has entered the Extreme Sailing Series. The entry will be the tenth team entered in the Stadium racing format.

Veteran America’s Cup driver Dean Barker will be again in charge of the New Zealand entry. He will joined by a veteran crew of America’s Cup sailors.

The Extreme Series will hold at least eight events in the upcoming season. Sailing on superfast multihulls, the series consists of short course races where decision making is on split second basis. Team work and superb skills are found on all teams, making the Extreme Series a great build-up to the 2017 America’s Cup.

While Barker is overall chief on the ETNZ entry, he will share the duty with Olympian Peter Burling. The current plan is for the two to split the driver position throughout the series.

Currently the ETNZ entry brings the team total to ten, with one more entry expected in the next several weeks. Mark Turner, Executive Chairman of organizers OC Sport said: 'We don't have a need or even want to grow the fleet massively – eight boats is our optimum to deliver top level stadium racing. We want the best sailors - we need to maintain that. Our model is commercial model and we attract commercial brands. It has been a conscious decision to take additional teams in 2014 as the next Cup cycle gets going again, and in 2015, it certainly won’t be a failure to have eight boats again.”

This series will provide exciting racing for fans all over the world as the venues move from place to place. After Singapore, the next race moves to Oman.
