Bark-a-pawlooza honors man’s best friend with pooch-approved activities

If you’re like many pet owners, your dog is the one person (yes, person) you can count on to raise your spirits after a long week. So why not thank your favorite furry companion with a weekend celebration dedicated to Chicago’s four-legged family members?

On Sunday, June 29th from 11am-3pm, Bark-a-pawlooza will kick off at DoGone Fun at 1717 S. State Street. Packed with events that the entire family can enjoy, Bark-a-pawlooza features activities that are designed to show your pooch a good time. Events include a silent auction, dog-approved treats, raffle prizes, human refreshments, and a pup-o-graphy booth to snap photos of guests and their fuzzy companions. Pups hoping to attract the attention of Tim Gunn can also participate in a pet fashion show, and extra-fashionable dogs can attend the V.I.P-uperazzi After Party.

Bark-a-pawlooza also includes educational activities in addition to the standard Chicago summer fun. Dogs and their humans can participate in obedience and agility training and socialization games with other attendees. Owners can pick up some tips during a Q&A session with a veterinarian, learn how to keep their best friends cool during these hot summer months, and participate in a cooking class that will highlight meals that both humans and pups can enjoy (although hopefully not from the same fork).

Guests can enter their exceptionally photogenic pets in the Bark-a-pawlooza yearbook contest for a chance to be featured in the official record of the event. Categories of Spaniel Superlatives include, among others, best smile, most likely to destroy your favorite shoes, class clown, most flirtatious, and pet/owner look-a-like (although whether that’s actually a win for the human may be debatable).

Are you a dog lover without a dog? Not a problem at Bark-a-pawlooza. A local dog shelter will be on hand during the event with its many adoptable dogs to connect humans with their ideal furry counterparts.

Amidst all of the fun, this festival keeps certain safety measures in mind. All dogs must be leashed upon entry to Bark-a-pawlooza and guests must provide vaccination records after registering their pets for events.

General admission for this event can be quite steep, however. A $30 fee for owner and dog will include class sessions, food, beverages, and a raffle ticket. Any additional human must pay a $5 admission fee. Human guests unaccompanied by a pup must pay a $15 admission fee for food and beverages. Furthermore, the V.I.P-uperazzi After Party is an additional $10, which covers food and beverages, owner/pet musical chairs, a red carpet photo, music, and dog park fees.
