Don't be afraid
When you think of the word "barf" what picture pops into your head? What comes to mind for many are the symptoms of a nasty case of the flu or the result of a night of heavy drinking. But for a progressive group of veterinarians and open-minded pet owners, the term BARF refers to something much more significant than the symptom of an upset stomach. BARF World pet food is a godsend for many dog and cat owners, helping to overcome allergies, skin and coat problems, digestive upset or weight issues.
In the world of dog nutrition, the term BARF refers to "biologically appropriate raw food" or bones and raw food. This feeding method includes healthy foods like meat, fruits, vegetables, bones, eggs and wholesome supplements like cod liver oil, alfalfa and kelp. These ingredients are not cooked however - instead they are left in their natural, raw state before being ground up and fed to the animal. For many dog moms and dads across the country, the BARF diet is the only sensible way to feed their pets.
Why A Raw Food Diet?
With so many pets developing diseases normally considered to be human illnesses (things like allergies, cancer, diabetes, and obesity) veterinarians and pet owners began to take a closer look at the current state of dog nutrition and to pinpoint the similarities between what we eat and what we feed our pets. For years, we have heard that eliminating processed foods and opting instead for raw whole foods is extremely beneficial for humans. Foods in their raw, natural state are rich in nutrients and fiber. There are also studies that show that eating raw vegetables helps to reduce the risk of various forms of cancer. So, it only makes sense that a raw food diet is best for pets too.
The Renegades of Raw
When American pharmacist and raw food diet expert, Robert Mueller began consulting for the top zoological societies around the world, he noticed a significant difference in the health, energy, and demeanor of the zoo's carnivores when they were fed a raw meat-based diet. With this knowledge in hand, he began to work on formulating raw food diets for peak performance in the racing greyhound arena.
Halfway around the world, renowned Australian veterinary surgeon, Dr. Ian Billinghurst was himself witness to a similar revelation in the improved health and vitality of his canine and feline patients once converted to a raw food diet. Billinghurst began to see a reduction in dental and skin problems, ear infections, digestive issues, diabetes, kidney issues, liver issues, bladder crystals and stones, and epilepsy. In fact, the animals in his practice were experiencing a reduced chance of developing both infectious and degenerative diseases, they rarely developed cancer or allergies, and - best of all - this healthy state continued into their golden years.
Convinced of the benefits that a raw food diet could provide to pets, in the summer of 2000, raw food pioneers Billinghurst and Mueller got together with a few other animal lovers to create BARF World Incorporated and spawned the raw pet food movement with the development of the Original BARF Diet® - the first raw food diet commercially available to pet owners.
Is Raw Food For Dogs Safe?
Dogs and cats are designed by nature to eat a raw food diet. They have shorter digestive tracts and their stomachs have a higher acidity level than humans. All of these factors make our pets apt to thrive on a raw food diet and protect them from any bacteria that may be present in raw foods.
Pet owners also don't need to worry about feeding bones to their pet. COOKED bones are dangerous but raw bones are a natural source of calcium and other essential minerals. BARF World goes one step further by grinding the bones in their BARF Diet patties and nuggets. This prevents any and all risk of choking and/or punctures while your pet still gets all the benefits of bone in their diet.
Going Raw Is Easy With the Original BARF Diet
Even the most finicky dog will love eating the Original BARF Diet®. Plus you don't have to worry about adding anything to the food because it comes complete, ready to be thawed and served.
BARF World's meats are all human-grade quality. They use a blend of farm-raised and commercially raised livestock, which conforms to USDA regulations. BARF World's lamb meat comes from New Zealand - the chicken, beef, and pork all comes from USDA inspected facilities.
