I hesitate to admit it, but I may have done a tiny skip and squeal as I approached the doors of Barbie: The Dreamhouse Experience at the Mall of America. I couldn’t help myself as my childhood fantasies were about to become a super-sized reality. I was going to get a sneak-peek, behind-the-scenes tour of Barbie’s ultra-pink pad. At my side was my eight-year old daughter, who was playing it much cooler than I.

Behind the doors of the 30,000 square-foot Dreamhouse, we were treated to two phases of the Barbie experience. The first was a personal tour through the nine rooms (and iconic elevator) that fans of Barbie’s currently popular web-series will recognize. Even if you are not familiar with the modern-day doll, there are plenty of Barbie blasts-from-the-pasts and collectors dolls to ogle over. (Can you spot the Dynasty Barbies?) Various tech-savvy activities and photo ops are sprinkled throughout the exhibit as well. What fashion-loving woman hasn’t wanted to step into Barbie’s closet and (virtually) try on her clothes?

Phase two of the experience includes taking part in the fun activities that inhabit Barbie’s world. This includes sketching designs in a Parisian fashion studio, walking a runway in a Barbie-worthy wardrobe of high-heels and feather boas, and styling up-dos on a row of Barbie heads.

To top off the adventure, stop by the Barbie gift shop and café or plan a birthday in the special party area. Heads up - after roughly two to three-hours in the Dreamhouse, you’ll likely leave overstimulated and feel like you have cotton candy coursing through your veins.

Barbie: The Dreamhouse Experience opens today and will run throughout the next few years in the EMS Entertainment Center on Level 3 of the Mall of America. You can view the exhibit 7-days a week but hours change seasonally. Check the Mall of America website for updates. Admission is $23.99 for all, but adults receive a $4 discount when they bring a child 12 or younger. Seniors and military also receive discounts and children 2 or younger are free.
