High in the mountains in Northern California – Calaveras County – sits a California historical landmark town known as Copperopolis. Unlike other mining towns in the area that were known for mining gold, Copperopolis was known for mining copper. Located on Highway 4 the town has now grown up and added a charming town square.
In this quaint town square sits a barbeque restaurant called Griff's BBQ & Grill. The restaurant has about as much character as you can imagine as you enter the massive wood door which boasts a saloon-type bar where beer and wine is served. Using reclaimed lumber and copper mining artifacts from Calaveras County, one can get the sense of days gone by. The history of this town is evident throughout the restaurant.
Having been here once before on the way home from Jamestown and most recently on my way home from visiting friends in Valley Springs/San Andreas, I stopped by once again for a great barbeque meal which rated high on my list of priorities.
If you can only try one item on the menu it would have to be their best seller – Pulled Pork Sandwich which consists of Griff’s slow smoked pulled pork, painted with Griff’s barbeque sauce, coleslaw and copper hogwash (a delicious marinade with peppers and spices) and your choice of side, served on a Dutch crunch roll. The crunch of the bread with the tender pork and the tangy sauces are a perfect combination! At $12.00 it’s a steal based on how much pulled pork is on the sandwich.
You might want to start off with their Mama’s Fried Pickles – the crispy batter and tangy pickle slices served with ranch dressing – is my favorite - $6.00. I would also recommend their Slow Smoked BBQ Ribs ($16.00 - $24.00) or ½ Chicken ($14.00).
Pull up a bar stool, you might want to stay awhile at Griff's BBQ & Grill. Located at 304 Town Square Road, Copperopolis, CA. Phone (209) 785-4745, Fax (209) 785-4845. You can also email them at: firstname.lastname@example.org. Check their website for hours and additional information.
