In the year 378 AD the Gothic and Barbarian chieftain Fritigern led his Gothic warriors at the Battle of Adrianople against the Roman Empire’s Eastern Army that was led by [Eastern] Roman Emperor Valens.
To the horror and shock of the empire’s provincial power brokers stationed in Constantinople and Rome, the Barbarians soundly defeated Valens’ forces.
The military defeat at Adrianople delivered a psychological blow so severe to these proud and powerful men that even the most ardent believer in an infinitely invincible Roman empire despondently recognized that the crushing defeat at the hands of the Barbarians exposed a severe crack in the empire’s “impenetrable wall”.
They fully understood that ultimately the defeat at Adrianople would serve as a catalyst for future Roman defeats and inevitably the end of Rome’s world dominance.
Within 40 fragile and chaotic years following Fritigern’s great victory the unthinkable occurred. Rome once considered the “western jewel” of the Roman Empire; a city that for five hundred and three years symbolized immense power, beauty, privilege and opulence, …staggered and fell like a “drunken man” to ruthless and fearless Barbarian hordes.
The great Roman Empire that once inspired men to articulate and implement democracy, create art and architectural / mechanical wonders that even made Cleopatra swoon, had now been replaced by separate states (provinces) that were governed by unlearned and superstitious war-mongering chieftains.
Within two short generations Europe had transformed from being a bright beacon of “intellectual and artistic light” to becoming a “dark and ignorant continent”.
And because Barbarians were allowed to “storm the gates” and overtake the “gate keepers”, for nearly one thousand years Europe was immersed into intellectual darkness.
“When barbaric rulers scoff at science in favor of superstitions and refuse to build new roads and bridges that connect other humans to each other,… when rulers regard the poor and near-poor as “fortunate-peasants” not worthy of human rights,… when rulers only see profit in waging wars while systematically eliminating the sick and the hopeless, have the rulers in all their magnificent effort, overtly converted the masses to being Barbarians too?” - Theodore W.
Fast-Forward 1,600 years later
In the fast and furious world of American politics the unthinkable is occurring. For the first time in nearly a full generation the world is being treated via satellite and cable News to Kabuki Theater a la Grand Old Party style.
At this very moment there is a boiling and toxic feud being fought between the GOP’s Tea Party Wing [“The Ideological Puritans”] and it’s Republican Establishment [“Elitist”] members.
In retrospect of how “the political system” is supposed to work, the Establishment Wing normally controls the “rules” of the political party’s governing system, party elections, and funding expenditures. News flash: Tea Partiers are no longer interested in being led by Republicans who don’t share their political and societal ideological beliefs nor do they give a damn about adhering to rules they didn’t create.
Tea Partiers view “Northern Yankee” Republicans like New York’s Congressman Peter King and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie as being snobs, elitists and secret friends of Barack Obama…mind you NOT President Obama, but “just” Barack Obama …some of the Tea Party faithful still stubbornly refuse to use that particular noun in conjunction with the name Obama.
And of course they accuse not-so-Yankee Republicans like Kentucky’s Senator Mitch McConnell of being politically lukewarm, out-of-touch dinosaurs who are entirely clueless to what “real Americans” want and need.
In contrast, the average Establishment Republican views the majority of Tea Partiers as being backward and unruly "siblings" that are in desperate need of a good spanking and a very, very lengthy time out.
The Tea Party’s “slash and burn” philosophy / tactics of bringing about political change [their version of Malcolm X’s “By any means possible”] if they cannot successfully win general elections is abhorrent, childish and barbaric to Establishment Republicans. Upon closer inspection, responsible Republicans understand that Tea Partiers are a frog’s hair width away from being full-fledged Anarchists.
And although the Establishment Republicans created this “monster” and sternly forbade it from leaving the castle without permission, it’s too late. Wayward Tea Partiers have escaped and have gathered in hordes, searching below the Mason Dixon Line and West of the Mississippi River for long lost family and friends who “patriotically” know every lyric to the confederate favorite, “I wish I was in Dixie”.
Let’s not be mistaken, it’s a “them vs. us”, coup d’état atmosphere in the GOP and it scares the Bejesus out of “reasonable” Republicans.
Amazingly, Republicans created and funded the “Barbarians” and now they can’t believe “Rome” is burning.
The Tea Partier’s commitment to keeping the government partially closed (and in the dark) if Obamacare wasn’t / isn’t delayed, defunded and then ripped into a thousand pieces was not based on some dark forecast by an Illuminati advisor who foretold that Obamacare would usher in the era of the Anti-Christ, no…not at all. Rather the Tea Party’s commitment to vanquish Obamacare and banish it forever to the dark kingdom of Mordor was based purely on political dogma and its core racial hatred for President Obama.
No longer feeling the need to speak in race hating “code”, Tea Partiers are now very comfortable saying out loud “America needs a White Republican president” and telling President Obama to “put the Quran down”.
Politically, conservatives hate any government program that uplifts the middle class and the poor. Taking away and eliminating all societal “safety nets” ensures only a few families will ever climb high enough up America’s “golden ladder” to run U.S. industries and government, while the rest of us peons are indebted to the banks from the cradle to the grave. It’s called 21st Century American Feudalism.
It’s been rumored that collectively conservatives giggle like little children on Christmas morning dreaming about an America where (1) the federal government’s only involvement with state leaders is via providing security against foreign enemies (not domestic enemies); (2) taxes are no longer federally collected and (3) State Court rulings reign supreme over federal laws… “Howdy do Cousin Jim Crow? Glad to see you back.”
Although all conservatives drool over a nearly non-existent federal government, “Obama derangement syndrome” within the Tea Party has greatly embarrassed the Establishment Republicans and the “old dinosaurs” are now afraid that the antics of their wayward siblings has simply turned-off too many sensible American voters.
And with the congressional and senatorial mid-term elections rapidly approaching in 2014 the old dinosaurs are afraid that their own political shenanigans to suppress Democrats from voting in future elections may be thwarted by a public outcry to vote most Republicans [Tea Party and All] out of office. Shifts in political power in Washington, D.C. equates to billions of dollars being lost and gained in the corporate world and Establishment Republicans love money just as much [if not more] than their Democrat friends.
So what’s an old GOP dinosaur to do? The answer is simple, tranquilize the monster and put it back in hibernation until needed again. Within the next four months lines in the “political sand” will be unmistakably drawn by both sides who for now reside in the same Republican tent.
In the near future watch for Old Guard Republicans to demand that outrageous acting Tea Partiers stop using the political brand name “Republican”, while true believers in "Puritanical-Conservatism" will be more than happy to oblige that demand.
In the interim, Democrats and “responsible” Republicans will unite (Good day General Powell) fighting together against Barbarians who are unabashedly afraid of science, a “Browner” America, and of course women and gay / lesbian rights.
In closing, significantly reducing the role of the Federal Government, eliminating societal safety nets, disclaiming and defunding federal science projects while simultaneously discarding human rights, will only further emasculate an already feeble nation.
Can the United States survive decades of a Barbaric-imposed Dark Age where federal funds no longer fix bridges and highway systems, or are used to address climate change or are collected to protect the rights of ALL its citizens? The honest answer is “No”.
It’s surreal, but we can hear the war cries of the “Barbarians at the Gate”, the question is do we have the intestinal fortitude and political resolve to stop them from entering? Inquiring minds want to know what you think, would a Tea Party takeover of the U.S. Government usher in decades of American Feudalism and intellectual Dark Ages? Sound off.
Until next time, Good day, God Bless and Good fishing.
