Barbara Walters still plans to fire Elisabeth Hasselbeck from ‘The View’

There will be a shakeup at ABC’s “The View,” despite last week’s denial from head honcho Barbara Walters. On March 17, the New York Post revealed that “The View” co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck is “toast” on the long-running daily chat fest and her days are numbered.

Last Monday, after the plan to fire the conservative co-host was leaked to the media, Walters announced, “We have no plans for Elisabeth to leave this show.”

Meanwhile, a source for the Post revealed that execs are ready to “freshen the show” by getting rid of Joy Behar (who announced her departure last week) and Hasselbeck. But when the Hasselbeck plans were prematurely leaked, Walters was reportedly furious over how it was mishandled and temporarily called off the firing.

In 2007, Hasselbeck’s infamous on-air exchange with then co-host Rosie O’Donnell caused the comedian to spontaneously quit the daytime chat fest three weeks before her scheduled departure date. O’Donnell accused Hasselbeck of not defending her against media criticism, and the argument was shown via split screen.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s contract with “The View” is up next year. According to Showbiz 411, Brooke Shields is a leading contender to fill her seat on the show – when the time comes.
