Barbara Walters in hospital with chicken pox (Photos)

Whoopi Goldberg, host of “The View” show, updated the studio audience that Barbara Walters has the chicken pox on Jan. 28. According to ABC News, Walters was stricken with the childhood disease after the onset of a fever. Doctors initially thought the fever stemmed from a sudden fall on the stair while in Washington; the host was in town to cover the presidential inauguration.

The talk show host’s fever was the onset of the chicken pox and not the result of the fall that led to a cut forehead.

The 83-year-old talk show host was transferred to a New York hospital from Washington for the duration of her recovery.

Whoopi Goldberg told “The View” audience in New York that Walters never had the chicken pox as a child.

Chicken pox is highly contagious brought on by high fevers, rash and red tender pus-filled blisters that can ooze and cause itching.

According to ABC News’ chief health and medical editor Dr. Richard Besser, “Adults are at increased risk of complications including pneumonia, brain inflammation and bacterial skin infections.”

"Shingles occurs when the virus, lying dormant in your nerve roots, reactivates," said Besser, adding that a shingles vaccine is available and recommended for all adults aged 60 and older. "The vaccine will cut in half your chances of getting shingles,” Besser further explained for those who have had childhood chicken pox.

The chicken pox vaccine has been in the market since 1995. It is strongly recommended for adults – those who have never had the chicken pox or did have them as a child – to consider being vaccinated due to the potential complications that arise from the disease.
