With the goal of seeing the number of women in the US Senate pass the 20 milestone, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) on Wednesday announced creation of the Win with Women 2012 political action committee.
Throughout the 222-year history of the United States under its current constitution, 39 women have served in the senate. There are 17 women in the US Senate today, 12 Democrats and five Republicans.
Boxer's PAC will concentrate on helping Democratic women, according to an emailed announcement.
"The Republicans have launched an all-out war on women," Boxer wrote.
"The GOP has blocked every jobs bill that would help women recover from a recession that has hit them hardest. They've tried again and again to take away a woman's right to choose, her protections from toxic pollution during pregnancy, her retirement security, and her advances in the health care reform law. In Mississippi, they are even trying to redefine personhood so that women would lose full access to fertility treatments, contraceptives, and emergency care during pregnancy.
"There is only one way to fight back -- and that is to elect this amazing team of women."
According to the PAC's website, the female candidates supported by the committee are:
- North Dakota: Heidi Heitkamp, the state's former attorney general;
- Washington: Incumbent US Sen. Maria Cantwell;
- Massachusetts: Elizabeth Warren, a Harvard University law professor;
- Wisconsin: US Rep. Tammy Baldwin;
- California: Incumbent US Sen. Dianne Feinstein;
- Missouri: Incumbent US Sen. Claire McCaskill;
- Hawaii: US Rep. Mazie K. Hirono;
- Minnesota: Incumbent US Sen. Amy Klobuchar;
- Nevada: US Rep. Shelley Berkley;
- New York: Incumbent US Sen. Kirsten E. Gillibrand; and
- Michigan: Incumbent US Sen. Debbie Stabenow.
