News of a bar ban of high-tech glasses is trending on the Internet Sunday.
Even though you can’t buy them yet, a Seattle dive bar says that it will ban new tech glasses from Google, MyNorthWest.com first reported Friday. Seattle’s 5 Point Café posted the Following message to its Facebook page:
"For the record, The 5 Point is the first Seattle business to ban in advance Google Glasses. And [butt] kickings will be encouraged for violators."
Google Glass is a new product that Google is in the process of developing. The glasses can take photos, video and display information such as maps or social media interactions.
"The 5 Point appeals to a wide variety of people," said 5 Point owner Dave Meinert. "Some of the tech geeks come here, we're close by Amazon [...] It's OK if you wear them. I just don't want them worn inside."
The bar’s Facebook page generated hundreds of comments, mostly supportive of the bar’s plans to ban the high-tech glasses.
Robert Vincent Bridge wrote, “Hey 5 Point! Congratulations for being ahead of the privacy curve. I fully agree with your rule. Any tips on how to get a 14-y.o. to kick the iPad addiction?”
Josh Swanke wrote, “100% for this ban. Great job 5 point.”
But on the other side, Aaron Kitson wrote, “I think the glasses are pretty stupid. However the ban on the glasses is equally idiotic.”
The reason for the ban? Meinert said it is to preserve his customer’s privacy.
"You have to understand the culture of The 5 Point which is a sometimes seedy, maybe notorious place and I think people want to go there and be not known," Meinert added. "Part of this is a joke, to be funny on Facebook and get a reaction, but part of it is serious because we don't let people film other people or take photos unwanted of other people in the bar because it's kind of a private place people go."
Google Glass is rumored to be made available late this year.
What do you think of the bar’s decision to ban Google Glass? Do you think other public places will or should follow? Would you buy Google Glass? Leave you comments below.
