Did you know that January is National Hobby Month? What better time of year to pick up something new—not just for you, but for your kids, too! With your kids at home all day, the best kind of hobby is one that all of you can do together. Beat the January blahs with a new hobby, and give all of you something to look forward to.
Start a book club at home. Choose a book that both you and your (older) children will enjoy reading. Once all of you have finished it, discuss it! This is a great learning exercise as well as a way to include books that might not ordinarily make it into your curriculum. Such classics as The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis or The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien might be one good starting place; or, pick up a new favorite like Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
Learn to knit, crochet, or some other crafty hobby. Girls, in particular, will get into this right along with you; and they may surprise you with their skill. Local stores like Michaels may have craft classes that will help you get started; or, look for tutorials on YouTube.
Scrapbook. Looking over pictures from past years will help you get excited about plans for the new one. It will reduce clutter as old pictures finally find a home. And, even better, it will help you connect your children to their past as you share the stories that go along with the photos.
Start a collection. It might be something simple, like rocks from different places that you visit; or, it might be something harder to find, like dolls, boxes, or snow globes. Whatever your choose, it will be more important if it has special meaning to you.
Choose a new kind of game to play. It might be a board game; a video game; or an active sport. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s something that interests all the members of the family.
No matter what hobby finds its way into your home, it will be sure to spice up the month and make things more interesting—and it might just help banish those blahs!
