Bandito Margarito has everything to gain, nothing to lose against Pacquiao

On January 21 of 2009, Antonio Margarito lost via ninth round TKO at the hands of Shane Mosley. It was the only time in his career he was ever stopped.

His lack of success with Mosley has been used as a gauge to predict how he will fare against Pacquiao, but there are a few significant differences that should be noted.

Prior to the Mosley fight, it was discovered by Mosley’s trainer, Nazim Richardson, that plaster of Paris objects had been inserted into Margarito’s handwraps. His hands were rewrapped, and the fight went on as scheduled.

The psychological aspect of boxing is extremely important. On that night, Margarito knew that he was in big trouble for what had just occurred. It’s a dangerous thing for any boxer to enter the ring when he isn’t focused on the task at hand. Margarito was at a very significant psychological disadvantage, and Mosley capitalized fully.

The boxer was suspended for fighting in the United States for one year before being denied a license by the California State Athletic Commission.

Texas, which had already been selected as the state that Pacquiao – Margarito would take place, granted Margarito’s appeal for a license.

Pacquiao has stated that he believes that Margarito knew that he had the little surprises in his handwraps. Most boxing fans agree with Pacquiao’s opinion.

Now that Margarito is set to face Pacquiao on November 13 at Cowboys Stadium, he has everything to gain.

The much bigger man will be physically and mentally prepared, and he will give it everything he has in his attempt to upset the Pound-for-Pound king. He will undoubtedly consider a win over the world’s greatest fighter to be his first step toward redemption.

Dale Pippin of Seligman believes that Margarito’s size and power could create problems for Pacquiao.

“He could beat Pacquiao. He’s a lot bigger, and he has a puncher’s chance,” Pippin said.

Margarito is known to have a granite chin, and good power. He’ll most likely come to the ring weighing at least 10 lbs more than the Pacman.

It would be foolish for any pundit to neglect to factor Margarito’s height, reach, toughness and mental and physical conditioning into the equation. He's going to want a win, and he's going to want it badly.

A multitude of great fighters have come to the ring fully confident that they had everything it would take to beat the Filipino warrior, only to be completely overwhelmed by Pacquiao’s speed, power and angles.

Margarito’s resilience and willingness to slug toe-to-toe should make for an exciting fight, but whether he can make it a competitive fight for more than a few rounds remains a question.

Size doesn't always matter especially in boxing. It's the spirit of the fighter that matters.

  • pcola 1 year ago

I totally concur with Mr. Scoggins that Margarito should not be taken lightly by Pacquiao at all due to his size, weight, strenght and most importantly his high motivation to score a convincing win against Pacquiao, considered to be the only mexicutioner alive, in front of thousands of live Mexican audience in Dallas, Cowboys stadium and perhaps millions of TV spectators around the world. He's also fully aware that winning big against Pacquiao would make him a big hero in Mexico and latino nations, but most significantly the greener pasturel fully covered with millions of dollars is within his reach in the very near future for mega fight challenges against the elite fighters. In light of this, Pacquiao has to prepare and train hard for this fight. Although, Margarito has all the advantages going into this fight, let's not forget that Pacquiao had always overcame the adversity he faced in the ring and came out a big winner after all. Pacquiao by TKO in 10th.

  • sander 1 year ago

I agree with you Mr Scoggins. Mr Plaster may have a "plaster chance". I mean puncher's chance. Considering his a bigger man. If he could land 2 or 3 power punch, Pacman could be in serious trouble.
He has more motivation than ever before and nothing to lose.

  • egg0000 1 year ago

In Margo's case he is happy to be in the ring w/ Pac, even if Pac is on PED & PLASTER OF PARIS... he has NOTHING to level with...same as floyd he is lucky to get 40%. Pac don't need him. floyd already knock himself by tripping at his tongue..

145lbs to 151lbs. is a CATCHWEIGHT DIVISION. And that is manny pacquiaos division.

in order to get a fight with pacquiao, you have to be:

    1. Tailor made for pacquiao style
    2. Weight drain
    3. Coming of a loss
    4. Last 2 fight must be lame and lousy
    (according to roach)
    5. Under top rank promotion
    6. Past your prime
    7. Slow and not a counter puncher artist. like marquez
    8. Never ask for random drug test
    9. Must imitate a punching bag inside the ring
    10. Dog lover

if you don't want the catch weight, then go down to pacman's natural weight, you have to consider the discrepancies; in height, weight, then consider the heart of Pacquiao by fighting these monsters bigger than him. Legendary fighters look like washed up after Pacquiao demolishes them, that's why gayweather doesn't want a fight with Manny, he doesn't want to be washed up. But, hey gaynonimous, Cotto is still fighting and a champion at that, so is Marquez, Morales is in the rebound, can you tell to these great fighter that they are washed up already?

  • joel123 1 year ago

everybody forgets margarito also has lots to loose.... if pacquiao defeats him in the early rounds... he can be seen as the only reason he had won fights (not only with cotto) because of his plasters.... and then history may remember him as a cheater through and through... if he changes his style -that means he is a cheat and the once powerful hands (that was once feared) was actually not there afterall but just cheats.... so for those who hate margarito, you should be the one who should like this bout because once and for all you know if he is really a cheater from the beginning of his boxing career or just a lousy one-time cheater like he always say... sure he may gain lots of money from this fight but if he loose... maybe his last

just fight dont worry about what you gain or not gain. thats whats wrong with boxing today.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

this article is spot on. the term bandito is hilarious, some hispanic boxing friends or ours might be offended though, esp the mexicans, this guy is dangerous, he comes to fight win or lose. some boxing scribes calls him the wrap man, the plaster man, the cement man and etc.

Get a life! Pachaters simply showed up here at Pacland and express their grit feelings towards Pacman. its really hard to accept the fact that FMJR is now eating dust when it comes to Pacman's level. They always say that FMJR will beat PAC, how come he beat PAC if he himself dont beleive he can??? And hes going to hide himself safe in jail, huh? A much better place for FMJR to avoid PAC.

of course size matters! The strategy that will be employed by Margarito is to exploit his reach advantage by throwing jabs and combinations. Am sure he will not engage Pacman in toe to toe.

I totally agree with you on this, Lorne. This is actually a dangerous fight for Manny if he takes Margo lightly. He has to be in his best physical condition to beat him. Margo has the chin to take one or two from Manny just to give one of his own. Margo was able to take the best of Cotto's punches and I think he would be able to take the same from Manny. If Manny would not slug out with Margo and just concentrate in going in and out, Manny would win by UD if not a TKO.

tailor made? what a bum this opinions are! who would they want pacquiao to face in 154lb? williams or berto? come on! come to your senses. who would give fans a good show. yes, margarito cheated in the past. the guy paid his due for crying out loud. if you talk about cheating why is mosley still having fights till now? mosley is a legitimate steroid user, so is dela hoya. more so floyd jr still takes in xyclocaine in his every big fights. so where is actually the purity in this cheating category? margarito is a big opponent. a mexican and a middleweight. a certified welter too. so whats the fuss with him fighting pacquaio?

  • nashingun 1 year ago

there are fans thats just pure haters pretending to have a standard to uphold. rubbish mindless haters.

for you to know, margarito is a welter too. a 147 lb is not a big deal for him and going for a catchweight of 150 in light middle is a NO BIG DEAL. marg is a legitimate welter in the first place! plus, this is in a middleweight, the biggest weight pac is going, not to mentions the height of 5'11"? this is actually a cherry pick you wouldnt want to take!

cry babies need their bottles right now. they should be put to sleep to shut up.
