Banana Joe is Best in Show (Photos)

What in the world is an Affenpinscher? Well, today, in the dog world, this breed of dog is very popular. After the famous Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show concluded yesterday at Madison Square Garden, the little black Banana Joe, “Joey,” is known to the world as the 2013 Best in Show!

According to the American Kennel Club, the delightful little Affenpinscher is a Terrier-like toy breed of dog that originated in Germany to rid kitchens of offensive rodents. The breed name means “monkey-like Terrier.” The breed was also prevalent in France and referred to as "Diablotin Moustachu" or the mustached little devil.

Banana Joe fit this bill perfectly, defeating six other dogs to win this prestigious award. He is black in color with wiry-type hair. Ordinary colors for this breed are black, grey, silver, red, black-and-tan, or belge (black, brown and/or white hairs mixed with red) Black masks and small white spots on the chest are allowed, but large spots are undesirable.

Banana Joe is good in the show ring. He has won many big shows, but nothing compared to the status of Westminster. Ernesto Lara, his handler, realized early on that this breed of dog is not trained, you just befriend him. Affenpinschers are alert, inquisitive, loyal and affectionate; normally quiet, but if threatened or attacked will display no fear.

Banana Joe had no fear. He just really wanted this! Michael Dougherty, the Judge of the 2013 contest, stated, “I’ve never had my hands on a better Affenpinscher. Ever. He has the muscle tone of a big dog.”

Joey played to the crowd. He was aware of his actions and totally enjoyed himself at Westminster. He knew it was showtime. He is one smart little character!

The dogs competing had to literally wait for two days to compete in the Best in Show since it is the last of four parts on the second night of the show. Dougherty never gave it away until the end who the winner would be.

Now the top dog will head back to the Netherlands where he was bred and born. Lara will no doubt miss the little fellow, but Banana Joe is finally retiring to his home. But in the end, he stated, “I had, absolutely, the time of my life.” So did Banana Joe, the Best in Show.

You did a fantastic job little fellow. Have a great retirement. You deserve it!
